How to Reduce Inflammation with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
This week, I want to discuss a pattern that frequently arises in my practice and is even more prevalent within our population. Inflammation is a response triggered by the immune system to combat injury, infection, or irritation. It serves as the body's defense mechanism, orchestrating a cascade of cellular events to eliminate harmful substances and initiate tissue repair. From minor cuts to chronic diseases like arthritis and cardiovascular conditions, inflammation manifests in various forms and impacts individuals of all ages, genders, and backgrounds.
From a Chinese Medicine perspective, we look at inflammation as an imbalance in the body's "Qi" (life force energy) and blood circulation. This accumulation disrupts the body's natural flow of energy, leading to swelling, redness, pain, and other symptoms commonly associated with inflammation. From a pattern perspective, inflammation can manifest as various imbalances such as Heat pattern, Dampness pattern, or a combination of both. Treatment in Chinese medicine focuses on restoring balance to the body by clearing heat, eliminating dampness, and promoting the smooth flow of Qi and blood.
Acupuncture works on promoting the smooth flow of "Qi" and blood to reduce inflammation and can modulate the immune response, decrease pro-inflammatory cytokines, and increase anti-inflammatory cytokines, thereby alleviating swelling, redness, and pain associated with inflammation. Additionally, a technique known as moxibustion (burning of mugwort and wormwood) or cupping to further enhance the therapeutic effects and restore harmony within the body.
